Jared Baugh Wins Dean Cline Classic At Antioch Speedway

Antioch, CA...July 13...Jared Baugh of Pittsburgh won the 20 lap Pacific Coast Hobby Stock Main Event Saturday night at Antioch Speedway. The occasion was the Third Annual Dean Cline Classic, and it was also the first 20-lap feature win of the season for Baugh. He used the victory to move to within 12 points of fifth in the standings after a late start to his season.

Reigning champion Grayson Baca of Brentwood has elected not to defend the title this season and only runs a limited schedule. On this occasion, he picked up his eight-lap heat race victory. Track officials added a four-lap Trophy Dash, sponsored by Polar Bear Rolled Ice Cream. Baca picked up the cash prize with his win in that race. Heat winner Aidan Ponciano of Oakley started on the pole next to Baca. Unfortunately for Baca, his race ended early. Meanwhile, Ponciano, Baugh and title contender Ryan Hart of Dos Palos mixed it up at the front of the pack. In the end, Baugh made the right moves to claim the lead and victory. Ponciano was a season-best second, followed by Hart, 2020 champion James Thomson of Pittsburg and Kevin Brown of Oakley.

Jason Jennings of Pittsburg won his first career IMCA Stock Car Main Event. The division was also given a Polar Bear Rolled Ice Cream Trophy Dash. Title contender Jason Robles of Rio Vista won that four-lap race after his son Kenneth Robles of Rio Vista made his season debut with an eight-lap heat race triumph. The IMCA point average put State point leader Scott Foster of Oakley and track point leader Jennings on the front row to battle early. Jennings would win that battle with Jason Robles getting around Foster to take up pursuit of Jennings. In the end, Jennings made all the right moves and came home with a well-earned first career victory over Robles, Foster, Jeff Bentancourt of Brentwood and Petaluma Speedway star Mitch Machado of Rohnert Park.

Brandon Carpenter of Galt won the 15-lap Figure 8 Main Event. Attrition from the Hobby Stock race eliminated three drivers prior to the start of the Figure 8. Previous winner Clarence Holbrook III of Galt was one of them. Coming off of his Dwarf Car victory a few weeks ago, Antioch's David Rosa jumped into a big lead early on. He was chasing his first Figure 8 win in over 20 years. A yellow flag waved seven laps in when Mike Conley Jr of Antioch stalled entering the first turn. Rosa was struck by Angela Brown of Antioch going through the X as the yellow flag had waved. He wasn't injured, and both cars were still running. Carpenter, Conley and James Graessle of Antioch were having a good battle for third during the early laps. On the restart, Carpenter took the lead, and Conley was able to move into second, where the duo would finish. Rosa settled for third, followed by Brown and Graessle.

Reigning champion Tom Davis of Los Molinos collected his fourth-consecutive 15-lap Mini Stock Main Event win. This followed his triumph in the six-lap heat race. The results of the evening moved Davis and Petaluma point leader Tom Brown of Santa Rosa into a tie for the Antioch lead. As has been the case this season, Davis and Brown battled at the front of the pack before Davis prevailed. Tony Quinonez of Corning ended up third ahead of rookie Matt Wirth of Oakland.

Devon Zuffa of Tracy became the third different 600 Micro Sprint winner in four races with his 15-lap Main Event triumph. It was also a clean sweep as he won the six-lap heat race and the four-lap Polar Bear Rolled Ice Cream Trophy Dash. Attrition eliminated reigning champion Don McLeister and Devin McLeister, both of Stockton, prior to the feature race. Zuffa had the pole and would hold off two-time winner Ken Carter of Santa Rosa for the satisfying win. Ryan Dotson of Fremont settled for third ahead of Antioch's Charlie Kight.

Racing resumes next Saturday night with the Ninth Annual Soares Memorial race, which pays tribute to the family that promoted the speedway for 42 years. IMCA Modifieds will be in action along with the IMCA Sport Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars, Dwarf Cars and Hardtops. For further information, go to www.raceantiochspeedway.com.
