Hogge Opens 64th Antioch Speedway Season With Victory Tuttle, Shrader, Ryland, Holbrook Other winners
Bobby Hogge IV of Salinas kicked off the 64th championship season of auto racing at Antioch Speedway with a 20 lap IMCA Modified win. Hogge is the all-time Main Event win leader in the track's history and a two-time track champion.
Rookie Jacob Mallet Jr of Oakley set the early pace. On the fifth lap, Hogge put it up on the outside In Turn 2 and emerged with the lead. Kellen Chadwick of Oakley swept into the second position and held it until mechanical issues sidelined him on Lap 15. Hogge led Mallet and reigning State champion Andrew Pearce of Oakley on a Lap 16 restart, but Mallet faded on the last lap as Pearce moved into second. Hogge picked up the satisfying win ahead of Pearce, Timothy Allerdings of Prescott Valley, Arizona, Keith Brown Jr of Greenbrier, AR and Mallet.
Jacob Tuttle of Oakley won the 20 lap Wingless Spec Sprint Main Event. The Oakley driver led the race from the outset with Bethel Island's Kevin Box an early second. Bob Newberry of Brentwood moved into the second position by Lap 6. Newberry reeled in Tuttle and ran closely in the waning laps. However, he was unable to make the move as Tuttle won ahead of Newberry, DJ Johnson of Stockton, Ethon Lanfri of Milpitas and Steve Maionchi of Sonora.
Reigning champion Kenny Shrader at Pacheco won the 20 lap IMCA Sport Modified Main Event. He led from the outset for the impressive win. Buddy Kniss and Jason Ryan Jr, both of Oakley, had a good battle for the second position. They went back and forth for just about every lap before a low pass in Turn 2 on Lap 14 put Ryan into second for good. Shrader cruised to an impressive win ahead of Ryan, Kniiss, Fred Ryland of Brentwood and Chuck Golden of Pittsburgh.
Clarence Holbrook III of Galt won the 20 lap Pacific Coast Hobby Stock Main Event. Holbrook had a spirited duel with Antioch's Ken Johns that saw them exchange the lead multiple times during the final ten circuits. Johns led until the fifth lap when Holbrook took over. Holbrook led a Lap 12 restart with Johns beating him in a near photo finish to the line a lap later. Holbrook remained tenacious as he took the lead on the inside down the back stretch on Lap 14. From there, Holbrook led the rest of the way for the impressive win. Ryan Hart of Turlock took second from Johns on the final lap as Chris Lewis of Oroville and James Thomson of Pittsburg completed the Top 5.
Fred Ryland of Brentwood won the 20 lap IMCA Stock Car Main Event. He led the race from the outset, and only a yellow flag on Lap 8 for Les Friend of Galt slowed the pace. Ryland continued to hold command on the restart as Buddy Kniss of Oakley settled into second. Friend moved back into third on Lap 11. Ryland went on to win by a straightaway ahead of Kniss with Friend in third, followed by Dave Hill of San Francisco and Dan Gonderman of Antioch.
Racing returns next week with the first appearance by the Hunt Wingless Spec Sprint Tour along with the Dwarf Cars, Mini Stocks, Hardtops and 600 Micros. For further information, go to www.raceantiochspeedway.com or check out the Antioch Speedway by PROmotions Facebook page.
