A Lap Around Antioch with Candice Martin - May 6, 2023
Here's the latest from the track. Yeah, it wasn't a great week in attendance, Wednesday or Saturday. The weather wasn't on our side, but the midweek race wasn't advisable. We weren't going to get a big crowd. We probably would have done better on Saturday had the weather been good from the start. People thought we would cancel and stayed away.
In any case, We did the lap for Rick Panfili, and I was asked to say some words by his widow, Diana. I've known them for over 30 years, and they are friends. So, I think I did okay with that. Then I jumped into a golf cart to run the lap with everybody. I've only done that once for my friend Mary Nordstrom, who died last year. In this case, I was actually driving and I ended up next to Rick's car.
Anyway, the racing was really good. The track has been good. The crew is working very hard to give us the best racing surface they can, and it shows. We're coming up on our Larry Damitz Memorial race, and I've done some things to help promote that. I'm hoping for a better night. All we can do is keep trying
Many race tracks like ours are struggling to get attendance. It's just a sign of the times. The families that have been a part of this for years are still involved, but we need to bring new people in. Of course, it's not cheap, even to watch the races. There are other options, and this is what we battle.
We keep working on it and trying to adapt. That's all we can do.
